Then, just a few dozen centimeters above the ground, each trunk bends sharply.

The curve is clean.
Almost perfect.

Always in the same direction.

After this strange inflection, the trunks straighten again.
They climb toward the sky as if nothing had happened.

Walking among them is unsettling.

It is not a single tree that intrigues you.

It is the fact that they are all the same.

Hundreds of trunks.
The same curve.

The forest is now known as Krzywy Las — the “Crooked Forest.”

There are many hypotheses.

Some speak of heavy snow.
Others of persistent winds during the early years of growth.

Some even suggest human intervention — trees deliberately bent to produce curved timber.

But no explanation truly prevails.

And perhaps that is not the most interesting part.

The more your network grows, the more you should slow down.

It sounds counterintuitive — and yet it’s very concrete.

As opportunities increase, the temptation is to accelerate: respond to everything, expand further, accept more. In the short term, it looks like growth. In the long term, it weakens the structure.

The network amplifies. It does not stabilize.

It makes what already exists more visible. It accelerates what was latent. It exposes strengths — but also cracks.
If your structure is clear, it extends it. If it is fragile, it puts it under strain.
Expansion is not a test of popularity; it is a test of solidity.

In this letter, I would like to raise a simple question:
How do you hold after expansion?

You can structure your activity, clarify your direction, grow your network — and still feel that something remains fragile.

How do we regulate what is opening?

The network opens, multiplies opportunities, accelerates exchanges. But without regulation, it exhausts.

Not immediately. Gradually. Almost imperceptibly.

You respond a little faster. You adjust a little more often. You adapt more than you decide.

Dispersion does not begin with collapse; it begins with a repeated micro-tension, almost invisible… until your energy can no longer keep up.

You can accept every request, multiply projects, publish more to “keep up.” Nothing collapses — but something tightens.

Slow growth is not an aesthetic choice; it is a discipline: a way of holding rhythm without dispersing.

What grows too fast holds poorly. What settles endures.

Is your structure truly keeping pace with the rhythm you are setting?

If the answer is uncertain, it is not failure. It is a signal that it may be time to choose what deserves to endure.

In southern Chile, in the Los Ríos region, stands a tree known as “Gran Abuelo” (The Great-Grandfather): a Patagonian cypress — Fitzroya cupressoides.

This venerable cypress does not seek acceleration: it endures.

This morning, it opened.

My Paphiopedilum ‘Pinocchio’ has opened its first flower.

The spike had been there for weeks.
The bud was swelling slowly, almost imperceptibly.
And this morning, the slipper unfolded.

A bright yellow pouch, speckled with brown.
A green dorsal sepal, lightly pubescent, streaked with darker markings.
Wavy lateral petals, mottled, almost bristled.

Nothing explosive.
Nothing spectacular in the media-driven sense of the word.

But a perfectly stable architecture.

Letting what matters circulate.

The seeds emerged in less than a week.

The room is heated. The soil does not truly know February; beyond the window, winter still lingers, but inside, growth has already begun. The pots have filled with slender stems, slightly too long for their age, as if warmth had persuaded them that spring had already arrived.

The light, however, carries nothing of spring. It comes late, low, oblique, crossing the room without insistence. It illuminates, but it does not yet support. The stems lean toward it with a fragile urgency. They have grown quickly. They are still learning how to stand.

I move the trays closer to the glass. I turn them slightly. I am not adjusting growth itself, but its orientation. Heat triggered the movement; light will decide the formches.

This contrast holds my attention. One can provoke an early emergence. One can accelerate the beginning. But what brings something out of the soil is not necessarily what will give it stability.

The stems will keep growing. The question is no longer whether they rise, but how they will hold.

Visibility fascinates humans.
Orientation fascinates plants.

A stem can receive full sunlight
and still grow crooked

Light is not an order.
It is information.

And information still needs interpretation.

A plant does not “grow toward the light” the way we imagine

Phototropism is not a magical attraction.
It is a hormonal mechanism.

When a stem detects more light on one side, it redistributes a hormone called auxin to the opposite side.

As a result, the shaded side elongates more, and the plant bends.

Light does not pull.
Shade organizes growth.

Direction does not come from exposure.
It emerges from how imbalance is interpreted.

Too much light can disorient

When suddenly exposed to intense sunlight, some plants produce stress proteins.

This process is known as photoinhibition.

Instead of accelerating growth, they slow down photosynthesis to prevent cellular damage.

More light is not always an advantage.

The more you force your growth, the less it holds.
It sounds counterintuitive. And yet.

In the living world, a plant pushed beyond its natural rhythm can give the illusion of vigor.
But that strength is unstable.
It holds… until it doesn’t.

In my last letter, I wrote about plasticity: the ability to shift direction without betraying oneself.
The responses I received confirmed something essential:

These principles are not meant to transform us.
They mostly shift our perspective.

And when perspective shifts, our relationship to effort, time, and progress shifts with it.

A concrete example: my tomato seedlings

This is exactly the risk I take when I start my tomato seedlings in January.
Warm conditions. Limited light.

They can grow too fast, stretch, and weaken.

It’s a special case because I monitor them. I adjust.
And let’s be honest — who has the patience to wait until October for their first tomato?

What I like about this example is its simplicity:
We can choose acceleration…

As long as we see the cost —
and compensate for it.

Some plants tolerate acceleration.
Others never negotiate their rhythm — no matter what we offer them.

A Plant Pause — The CamelliaWhile working on this letter, I thought again of a fragment I once wrote — an expedition notebook dedicated to the camellia.

It was barely read. And that may be exactly right.

The camellia does not like to be rushed.
It accepts travel, relocation, different skies.

But it never negotiates its rhythm.

In the notebooks, one sentence returns, simple, almost dry:

I asked when it bloomed exactly.
I was told: when it is ready.

That fragment is not there to illustrate an idea.
It is there to hold a presence.

In a guide I wrote some time ago, I tried to put into words
what the living world applies without ever stating:

Slow growth is not a flaw.
It is a strategy.

What grows too fast breaks.
What grows at the right pace endures.

That is exactly what I try to cultivate here as well.

The 14-day practice — Grow just enough

I’d like to offer a deliberately simple exercise.
Not a challenge. Not a performance. A ritual.

For 14 days, dedicate 10 minutes a day to a single micro-action that nourishes your communication.

For example:
– write a few lines
– refine a sentence
– publish a short note
– comment on someone’s work
– read five minutes of something inspiring
– sort one idea

Just one action. Every day.

At the end, ask yourself:
– What has grown?
– What has become clearer?
– What feels lighter?

You can jot it down roughly. It doesn’t have to be polished.

The goal is not to produce.
It is to return to alignment.

I set down these lines under the shelter of a walled garden, allowed to observe but rarely to collect.
The camellia is everywhere here, yet never puts itself on display.
A dense shrub, dark-leaved, almost austere, it seeks neither height nor spread.
It holds.

Its flowers were shown to me without comment, as one points to something self-evident.
They appear in the cold season, when other plants withdraw.
No scent.
A full form, almost too perfect to solicit the eye.

I asked when it flowered exactly.
The answer was: when it is ready.

Nota bene — This plant appears not to suffer from cold, provided it is not pressed. Excessive care seems more harmful to it than the severity of the climate.

The crossing tests plants more than men.
Salt air burns, humidity stagnates, temperature variations exhaust the roots.
Many will not endure.

The camellia, however, shows nothing.
No excessive vigor, no collapse.
I record this stability with caution: the quietest plants are sometimes those that renounce without warning.

I reduce interventions to the strict minimum.
The less it is handled, the better it seems to withstand the voyage.

Dutch Republic — Leiden, winter 1702

The camellia is now installed under glass, in a cold greenhouse.
It is monitored, observed, measured almost more than it is truly seen.

It does not flower.

Some conclude that acclimatization has failed.
I am not certain.
It is alive, dense, unchanged.
Perhaps it is simply waiting for us to stop waiting for it.

Southern China — Fujian Province, autumn 1768

Confusion is constant in the notebooks.
One speaks of camellia, thinks of tea, sometimes collects one believing it to be the other.

Here, however, the distinction is obvious to anyone who takes the time to observe.

Tea is pruned, contained, subjected to regular harvest.
The ornamental camellia, by contrast, keeps its distance from use.
It shares the same family, the same firmness of leaf, yet refuses any immediate productive function.

I note that merchants take little interest in its flowers.
They are not consumed.
They are not transformed.
They do not travel well, except on the plant itself.

The camellia is not a resource.
It is a presence.

Perhaps this is why it followed the tea routes without ever sharing their fate.
Where Camellia sinensis was exploited, pruned, rationalized,
the winter camellia remained on the margins—almost useless, and therefore intact.

I close this notebook with this thought:
some plants survive journeys only because we do not know what to ask of them.

Marginal remark — The tea camellia and the garden camellia are often confused, as their leaves resemble one another. Yet one readily submits to use, while the other consistently eludes it.

The camellia is now in fashion.

I understand then that, despite two centuries of voyages, collections, and care, the camellia has never been domesticated.

Late observation — The camellia flower does not corrupt upon falling, but leaves the plant whole, as if refusing any prolonged degradation.

Final note — undated

When I reread these notebooks as a whole, one thing becomes clear:
the camellia has never learned our uses.

It crosses seas, endures winters, changes skies, yet remains faithful to its own manner of being.
It does not adapt to please.
It persists.

Perhaps this is why it flowers in winter:
not to defy the season,
but because it has never consented to live according to any rhythm other than its own.

This morning, I caught my Chlorophytum… moving house again.

Without shifting an inch, it had slid a little closer to the edge of its shelf.
As if it were about to jump.

In reality, it was simply looking for a bit more light

And I think we all do the same thing at the beginning of a new year:
we move without announcing it, we reorient ourselves without breaking everything,
we lean gently toward what truly answers us.

In this letter, I want to show you how to draw inspiration from this vegetal movement —
how to change without betraying yourself —
and why it’s far more powerful than any action plan.

Watching my Chlorophytum pivot once again, I was reminded of something:
in the living world, change never starts with a sharp turn.
It begins with a shift in allure.

When the living changes its pace

Instead of explaining how plasticity works
(I already went deep into the mechanics in a Chlorophyll Capsule — I’ll add the link below),
I’d like to take you into what it feels like.

Plasticity, in the living world, isn’t a process.
It’s an atmosphere.

It’s that nearly imperceptible moment when a plant lets go of a direction that no longer responds.
Not because it “decided” something else…
but because another spot speaks to it more clearly.

It doesn’t fight.
It listens.

Plasticity is that quiet gesture:
→ when a root speeds up into a path it couldn’t sense an hour earlier
→ when a bud chooses to wait instead of opening
→ when a branch gives up direct light to gently bypass an obstacle
→ when a tree accepts a little asymmetry so it can remain standing

In the living world, adjustment is never spectacular.

What it teaches us

🌱 — You can change your angle without changing your story.
A plant doesn’t renounce itself when it pivots — it repositions.
It seeks a trajectory that responds better, without abandoning what it is.
We’re the same: sometimes it’s not the destination that needs revisiting… just the posture.

🌱 — The right direction is never an idea. It is a response from the real.
The living doesn’t “choose.”
It listens.

Dormancy is not a romantic version of hibernation.

Dormancy, n.
A state of biological inactivity marked by a temporary halt in development, characteristic of seeds and winter buds, whether vegetative or floral.

It is a precise strategy: when conditions become unfavorable (cold, lack of light, stress) many plants and seeds shift into a mode of active waiting.

At the surface, nothing seems to move.
No new leaves.
No new shoots.

And yet beneath, life consolidates, stores, repairs, prepares what comes next.

What dormancy changes in our relationship to time

Not every moment is a good moment to grow.

We often confuse calendar availability with inner availability.
Because a time slot exists, we assume it must be filled.

The living world works differently.
It chooses its windows of expansion.
It accepts that some periods are not meant for results, but for recalibration.

January is not always made for “producing.”
Sometimes, it exists simply to realign.

A pause can be chosen, not endured.
Dormancy is not collapse.
It is not “burning out” or “disappearing.”

It is a regulated decision:
→ reducing visible activity to stabilize what is invisible,
→ revisiting priorities,
→ clarifying what truly deserves to be nourished,
→ accepting a personal tempo, even when it runs counter to the social rhythm.

Future vitality is prepared during calm phases.
Buds are not formed in spring.
They are shaped long before, in silent, unspectacular periods.

Many of our future outcomes will depend on what we lay down now underground:
simpler systems, clearer choices, and sometimes, deliberate decisions not to act.

I’d like to suggest a small ritual, free of performance pressure: the dormant week.

Choose one week in January during which you deliberately decide not to launch anything new.
No big project.
No new offer.
No major redesigns.

Just a protected stretch of time.

During that week, you can limit yourself to three modest gestures:

• clarify what you truly want to nurture in 2026 (three projects maximum)

• stop one thing that no longer deserves your energy

• put in place a micro-system that lightens your load (a routine, a tool, an appointment with yourself)

See this period not as a delay, but as a buffer zone.
A chosen dormancy, preparing a more accurate growth, at the right time.

You can rename this ritual in your own way — bud week, underground week, or any word that resonates with you.

How can we tell, honestly, whether we are in true dormancy…
or simply avoiding what matters most?

The line is thin. Even the living world sometimes moves along its edge.

Letting what matters circulate.

This plant has always intrigued me.

Often — and wrongly — called the “resurrection plant” or the “Rose of Jericho” (names that actually refer to several different plants with very different strategies), it is frequently sold as an object — sometimes even as a kind of vegetal magic trick.

It is shown dry, curled in on itself, grey, almost dead.
Then a little water is poured on it,
and green returns.

The effect is immediate. Almost too immediate.
As if life had to manifest itself through a visible, spectacular transformation.

For a long time, I watched these demonstrations without lingering on them.
They sparked amazement, but not reflection.
Until the day I felt the need to understand what was really happening — beyond the gesture and the effect.
Not what the plant shows,
but what it does.

Selaginella lepidophylla is a poikilohydric plant
(a somewhat austere term for a radical strategy).

Its physiology depends entirely on the water available in its environment.
It does not finely regulate its hydration like most plants do.
It adapts to it — completely.

When humidity disappears, Selaginella does not fight.
It does not force itself.
It does not try to maintain a minimal activity “just to hold on.”

It withdraws.

Its metabolism slows almost to a standstill.
Its tissues protect themselves, its internal structures stabilise,
and the whole of its organisation remains intact.

On the surface, everything suggests an ending.
The plant appears dried out, frozen, as if withdrawn from the living world.
But what truly matters, at that moment, is no longer happening on the surface.

People often speak of “resurrection” when it comes to this plant.

The word is appealing.
But it is misleading.

Selaginella does not come back to life — quite simply because it never truly left it.
Time did not erase its organisation;
it was suspended.

When water returns, the plant unfolds.
Not like a heroic restart,
nor like a hard-won victory,
but as a silent continuity.

The stems loosen.
Green reappears.
Form takes its place again, exactly where it had withdrawn.

If one takes the time to watch this moment without looking for an effect,
there is nothing spectacular.
No overcoming. No triumph.

Simply a strategy adjusted to an unstable environment.
Selaginella does not survive through resistance,
but through retreat.

During dormancy, it produces nothing.
It colonises nothing.
It occupies no space.

And yet, it endures.

Not all plants move through extreme periods in the same way.
Some survive themselves;
others disappear, but transmit.

Two different strategies.
Two ways of not breaking the thread.

Since discovering this plant, I pay more attention to what does not move.
To paused projects.
To ideas set aside.
To periods when nothing seems to be moving forward.

Because sometimes, what looks like a stop
is not a failure,
but a very precise way of remaining intact.

I discovered Pando without looking for it. A conversation with a passionate colleague, an article skimmed absent-mindedly, several books referencing it—then this sentence imposed itself: this is not a forest.

On screen, however, everything looked like one. Thousands of quaking aspen trunks (Populus tremuloides), spread across dozens of hectares in Utah, trembling in unison with the wind. Nothing suggested that this landscape—covering nearly 43 hectares, the equivalent of 60 football fields—was in fact a single living organism.

What we see as a forest is actually a natural clone. Around 47,000 trunks, genetically identical, connected by the same underground root system. One sap flow, one DNA, a biomass estimated at over 6,000 tons—making Pando the heaviest living organism known to date.

Some researchers estimate its age at over 10,000 years; others propose models reaching as far as 80,000. Vertiginous numbers, yet almost secondary compared to what they reveal: longevity is not carried by what emerges, but by what connects.

Beneath the surface, roots do not cross—they extend. Each trunk is merely a local expression, a way for the same genotype to manifest wherever conditions allow.

• Individually, a quaking aspen remains vulnerable.

• Collectively, linked to this continuous network, it endures for centuries.

Pando’s resilience does not come from the strength of each tree, but from the continuity of the system.

It was at this point that the parallel with our human collectives became clear. In organizations, we often imagine strength at the surface: more voices, more messages, more visibility. We stack expressions hoping to manufacture identity. The living world works the opposite way. Pando seeks neither demonstration nor apparent coherence. It shares a single source and lets forms vary freely.

As long as the root is clear, diversity does not weaken—it strengthens. When the root becomes blurred, even the most beautiful forest eventually fragments.

Since learning about Pando, I look differently at collective projects and multi-voiced communication. I no longer ask first who is speaking, or how many are speaking, but what is truly circulating beneath the surface.

Because what allows an organism to weigh thousands of tons, cover entire hectares, and last for millennia is never what shows. It is what connects.

The cold that surprises

On Monday, I just wanted to take the temperature.
Nothing more.
A quick message to feel the trend:
the Christmas campaign should have been gaining momentum.

Instead, I received a call:

A sharp message, falling out of nowhere.
Like a late frost at dawn — the kind that wasn’t forecast,

Look at the field, not the feeling

I could have panicked too.

So I did what growers do best:
I went to check the field.

Sources.
Behaviors.
Pathways.
And everything told the same story:

The cold was coming from there — not from the writing.

Don’t break the buds

Meanwhile, a bit of panic had begun to sprout on the client’s side.
Counterproductive actions were starting to unfold.

And like in a greenhouse at sunrise, I had to slow everything down.
Pause.
Bring back clarity.
Cut the heat before the buds opened in all the wrong directions.

Because a wrong diagnosis is like sudden warmth on a frozen branch:

Two lessons worth keeping

That Monday reminded me of two essential truths in any living communication system:

🌱 2. Root Technology: The Intelligent Network

Beneath our feet, roots build networks more sophisticated than many human systems. They:

• explore multiple paths simultaneously,

• compare soil quality,

• establish connections with mycorrhizal fungi,

• exchange nutrients, sugars, and chemical signals,

• distribute resources to the zones that need them most.

Researchers call this the Wood Wide Web, popularized by the work of Suzanne Simard.

This network is not a metaphor:
its logic resembles flow optimization, distributed systems, even deep learning.

👉 What you can apply today

Map your network like a root system
Roots don’t go “everywhere” — they explore intelligently.

→ List the 10 people who nourish your work today.
→ List the 10 who drain you, or return no flow.
→ Set an intention: strengthen the first group, reduce the noise of the second.

You’ll immediately see where real value circulates.

Seek fertile soils (not easy soils)
A root doesn’t settle for the surface. It probes, insists, advances where the response is good.

→ Identify the environments where you feel yourself “growing” —
spaces, projects, platforms, communities.
→ Ask yourself a simple question: “Where do I grow best?”
→ Invest preferentially in those terrains.

Terrain determines 80% of growth.

Maintain reciprocal connections (the mycorrhizal logic)
Mycorrhizae exchange resources when the relationship is balanced.

→ Nurture your two-way relationships regularly, even with small gestures.
→ Offer a resource or a piece of help before asking for one.
→ Cultivate symbiotic, not transactional, collaborations.

In a living network, generosity is a strategy — not an accident.

Bypass poor or saturated zones
Roots avoid soils that are depleted, toxic, or unproductive.

→ Identify the spaces where you invest a lot… for almost nothing.
→ Reduce your presence in those zones (without guilt).
→ Reallocate your energy toward fertile soils (see point above).

Sometimes not investing is the best decision.

🪨 3. The Technology of Constraint: The Living World as Engineer

In nature, constraint is not a hindrance — it is a trigger for adaptation.

Faced with wind, drought, poor soils, or obstacles, plants quickly adjust three essential things:

• their form (morphological plasticity),

• their energy allocation (trade-offs),

• their advancement strategy (bypassing rather than force).

This trio makes them silent engineers.

👉 What you can apply today

Decide like a plant: the cost ↔ benefit test
Plants never invest where the return is zero. They cut. They redirect. They simplify.

→ Before each task, ask yourself: “Does this give me more than it costs?”
→ If the answer is no → stop or take a detour.
→ Reserve your energy for actions with real impact.

You’ll avoid 80% of the micro-dispersions that silently exhaust you.

Simplify your environment to clarify your decisions
Under stress, plants reduce their leaf surface: less evaporation, more efficiency.

→ Reduce your visual noise (open tabs, notifications, floating to-dos).
→ Do a light pruning: remove 20% of what occupies your mental space.
→ Keep in sight only what nourishes your objective.

Clarity is never a luxury — it is an adaptive strategy.

Use constraint as a framework for innovation
The living world’s greatest innovations emerge from limitation:
drought → storage
wind → reinforcement
poor soil → root exploration

→ Give yourself one voluntary constraint (time, tools, resources).
→ “How can I do better with less?” becomes a creative trigger.
→ One rule: one solution, not twenty.

Lack reduces hesitation, focuses attention, and accelerates decisions.

Bypass rather than force
A root never pushes against a stone. It tests, adapts, and finds a path around it.

→ If a project is blocked, don’t force it → change the angle, the order, the entry point.
→ If a professional relationship resists, don’t drain yourself → explore another channel, another person, another timing.
→ If a goal feels “heavy,” break it down until a simple route reappears.

Bypassing is a strategy — not an abandonment.

As I told you in a recent Note, I went to Paysalia with one guiding rule in mind:
a network only lives through what it allows to circulate.

And what better place to test that than a garden-focused trade show?

I was expecting something like a quiet forest floor at dawn.
Instead, I stepped into a full-blown ecosystem in motion.
Second day: 20,000 visitors, 1,800 exhibitors, aisles humming, voices rising, workshops overlapping.
A show at its peak — the exact moment when the living world reveals what it connects… and what it refuses to.

Very quickly, one thing became obvious:
in a show dedicated to plants, not every stand is… alive.

Some were stunning, staged almost like theatrical gardens.
From afar, you’d believe it: “something is growing here.”
But two steps closer… nothing.
No availability, no welcome — sapless under a perfect surface.
A symbiosis that seemed possible, and that evaporated as you approached.

And then, the opposite.
Smaller spaces, less polished, less “Instagram-ready”, but porous.
An inviting glance.
A real moment of listening.
A conversation opening without effort — like a mycorrhiza recognising a familiar signal and connecting instantly.

Connections today rarely look like business cards.
They happen through the event app, a QR code scanned on the move,
a document sent seconds later, an immediate follow on social networks.

But none of that really matters.
It’s never the tool that creates the connection — it’s the impulse behind it.

In the end, I gathered more anchor points than expected.
Not contacts to stack, no.
Filaments — ready to extend as soon as I turn on the right light.
(Next Tuesday will be devoted to growth: a day to nurture what, in my view, truly deserves to grow.)

This visit confirmed something I had sensed for a long time:
the mycorrhizal rule isn’t a pretty metaphor.
It’s a way of reading large events, of sensing where real fertility circulates, and of not getting hypnotised by the surface décor.

And maybe one day, you too will walk through one of these immense shows.
1,800 exhibitors, 20,000 visitors, kilometres of aisles…
It’s easy to get lost if you don’t know where to place your roots.

So I decided to distil this exploration into a simple, living, practical method —
to help you create connections that truly nourish, without exhausting yourself, and without losing the essence.

Morning is not yet morning.
It is a suspended light, almost motionless, slipping through the greenhouse before choosing a direction.
It hesitates too, as if it didn’t want to disturb what is still asleep.

The bonsai stands there in that fragile moment when shadows no longer know whether to stay or fade.
I know it well, and yet it surprises me every day —
not with its branches, but with what happens underneath.

I lift the pot with the kind of restraint we use when touching something that doesn’t truly belong to us.
A residue of respect — or superstition.
The soil is cool.
And when I raise the root ball, a tiny space opens beneath it, a place where time moves differently.

I expected the roots to continue their fine choreography through the substrate.
But one of them had stopped.

Not broken.
Not disturbed.
Just… stopped.

It had met a stone — a small, dark piece of rock, discreet, lodged there like a fragment of ancient memory.
It could have gone around it, pierced it, or exhausted itself against it.
But it didn’t.

The root asked the stone a silent question.
And the stone answered with its usual silence.

So the root brushed along its surface, gently, with the kind of slowness only beings unfamiliar with haste can afford.
It followed the curve, explored the irregularities, let its tip glide like a fingertip reading relief.
Then it pivoted.
Barely.
A tiny decision — but a decision all the same.

That gesture — slow enough to almost escape perception — takes me back to another gesture, far from here.

A few weeks ago, I read a story in a Spanish newsletter.
A man recalled his childhood fascination for a maple rooted on a rock.
It was in the 1980s, in a Madrid garden center called Los Peñotes.
He was six or seven.
And that tree, perched on a stone like a living being clinging to the impossible, marked him so deeply that he asked for a bonsai for his birthday.

He received an olive tree, planted clumsily in a perforated tray.
The tree did not survive.
But the image did.
Thirty-five years later, he recreated it: a vertical rock, a young plant tied to it, layers of sphagnum, black film, clear film, bandage, pressure, patience.

He wrote a sentence I haven’t been able to forget:
“Even when the roots cling perfectly to the rock, their own growth tends to pull them away.”

They had to be guided.
Brought back.
Encouraged without being forced.
Helped to stay close to what supported them — even when their own strength pulled them elsewhere.

I look at the root before me.
It knows nothing of Spain, of Los Peñotes, or of the moist sphagnum of another tree growing somewhere else.
But it repeats, in its own way, what countless trees have done before:
observe, understand, adjust.

Another root, finer, arrives just behind.
A third one, paler, already draws its path along the stone, as if the first movement had opened a way the others naturally follow.

The rock remains as it is: compact, immobile, certain of its eternity.
But under my eyes, it seems to lose a little of that certainty —
not because it is broken,
but because it is integrated,
adapted to,
carried forward.

I set the pot down.
The sound is almost imperceptible.
Nothing moves in the greenhouse — and yet everything is moving.

I stay there a long moment, unable to leave, watching what cannot be seen:
the micro-shift,
the intelligence of detour,
this ancient, discreet way of inhabiting the world —
not by defeating, but by continuing.

When I close the door, something shifts in me too, very softly, like a root around a stone.
I don’t know what it is yet.
Maybe I’ll know tomorrow.
Maybe in thirty years.
Maybe one day someone will lift this same pot, notice the curve, the tension, the almost invisible trace of a tiny gesture — and understand in turn.

Because life doesn’t always leave a message.
Sometimes it leaves a direction.
And it’s up to us to read it.
